How our programmes work

Screening is only the beginning.

Vision access is a pathway, not a one-day event. Our role is to coordinate school-community programmes and help the right professionals, tools and support reach learners.

Programmes are scoped with each school and delivery partner. Not every outreach includes every service.

From first conversation to follow-through

  1. 01

    Engage the school

Understand the school context, identify learners and arrange practical permissions, scheduling and suitable spaces.

  2. 02

    Consent and safeguard

Coordinate school and appropriate caregiver consent. Protect learner dignity and collect only necessary health information.

  3. 03

    Screen

Qualified personnel carry out appropriate screening to identify learners who may need comprehensive assessment. Screening is not a diagnosis.

  4. 04

    Examine and prescribe

Where needed, refer learners for eye examination and refraction by appropriately registered or qualified clinicians. The clinical team determines the care plan.

  5. 05

    Correct and equip

Coordinate prescribed spectacles, optical laboratory fulfilment, appropriate low-vision aids and other assistive tools when indicated and resources permit.

  6. 06

    Teach

Share age-appropriate eye-health guidance with learners, caregivers and educators, including how to use and care for prescribed support.

  7. 07

    Refer and follow through

Track referrals, unfulfilled prescriptions and outstanding care. Confirm delivery where evidence is available, and report what remains open.

  8. 08

    Report and improve

Publish supported programme-level counts without identifying learners: screened, dispensed, orders placed, referrals and outstanding needs.

Clinical boundaries

Professional decisions belong to clinicians.

Rolled Sleeves is not a public eye clinic and does not independently diagnose or prescribe treatment. Eye examinations, diagnosis, refraction and prescribing are performed by appropriately qualified professionals.

Learners' care and personal health information must never be used for publicity without appropriate permissions.

Our programme evidence

What completed support looks like.

In October 2024 at Open Air School in Durban, clinical reporting recorded 99 learners screened, 49 spectacles dispensed and 49 separate laboratory orders placed.

Laboratory orders are not counted as delivered spectacles without confirmation of fulfilment.
