Rolled Sleeves Rolled Sleeves Outreach Program began with a simple observation: in under-resourced schools across South Africa, children were failing not because they couldn't learn, but because they couldn't see. A learner squinting at a chalkboard is not a discipline problem. It is a solvable health problem that costs less than most people spend on a weekend.
We are a registered nonprofit company (NPC 2023/951241/08) providing vision screenings, prescription glasses, low-vision aids, and eye health education directly to learners who need them most. Our first outreach, in partnership with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation at Open Air School in Durban, served around 98 learners from pre-primary through Grade 12 and showed us what restored sight does — not just for grades, but for confidence, dignity, and belonging.
The name is the mission. No committees, no distance. Sleeves rolled, hands on.
In isiZulu, ukubona means to see. But it carries more: to understand, to witness, to know. When a child receives glasses, we are not correcting eyes. We are restoring their ability to fully take part in their own life.
We are a young organisation with one project behind us, a signed thank-you from the school's principal, and a clear plan ahead. We would rather show you one true story than ten inflated ones.
