What screening does
A vision screening is a brief check designed to identify people who may need further assessment. It can help programmes decide which learners should be referred to a qualified eye-care professional.
What screening does not do
A screening does not diagnose an eye condition, determine a complete prescription or replace a comprehensive clinical examination. A screening referral is the start of a next step, not a diagnosis.
What a comprehensive examination does
A qualified eye-care professional carries out the clinical assessment needed to evaluate vision and eye health, diagnose where appropriate, prescribe correction and recommend management or referral.
Why follow-through matters
A programme should track whether learners who require further assessment actually reach that next stage. Counting referrals alone can hide the access gap between identifying a possible need and receiving appropriate care.
