Signs of vision difficulty

Some behaviours may suggest that a learner is having difficulty using their vision effectively. No single sign proves that a vision problem is present.

Possible signs

A learner may move closer to written information, hold reading material unusually close, squint, close or cover one eye, lose their place when reading, avoid visually demanding work or report that things look blurred.

School performance is not a diagnosis

Difficulty copying from the board, slower reading or reduced classroom participation can have many causes. Vision should be considered where relevant without treating it as the automatic explanation.

Ask what the learner experiences

Learners can often describe what feels difficult, when it happens and what helps. Their experience should be part of deciding whether further assessment or classroom adjustment is needed.

Seek appropriate assessment

Persistent or concerning signs should be discussed with an appropriately qualified eye-care professional. Urgent eye pain, sudden vision change or injury should be treated as a health concern rather than a school-screening issue.
